EPISODE 1: MURDER ON VAGABOND WAY
A warm summer morning in June 2004 quickly becomes a day of terror for residents of Altamonte Springs, Florida. Cheryl Williams and her mother Carol Bareis are found brutally stabbed to death in their home at 121 Vagabond Way. The series premiere dives head first into the brutal murders of two Florida women and the possible suspects who could’ve committed such a monstrous crime. One person’s run-in with the law, one person’s mental health journey, and one illegal immigrant whose whereabouts the night of the murders are in question – but do any (or all of these) stories point to the identity of the murderer?
EPISODE 2: BEER RUN
Clemente Aguirre-Jarquin, a Honduran immigrant, who lives next door to the victims, makes a shocking admission that will turn the case on its head. But as the saying goes, things aren’t always what they seem. Alibis are investigated, law enforcement discovers the murder weapon’s suspicious ties to a suspect, and someone is indicted for first degree murder.
EPISODE 3: MOUNTING EVIDENCE
Three months after the murders of Carol Bareis and Cheryl Williams, Clemente’s defense attorneys build their case. Evidence is gathered and analyzed and depositions are taken. Conflicting accounts of Clemente’s character paint two different images; one describes a good employee (although not always reliable); and one of a menacing, threatening presence. A key piece of evidence has damning connections to Clemente that will have major implications in his trial.
EPISODE 4: THE STATE V. CLEMENTE
In late February of 2006, the murder trial of Clemente Aguirre-Jarquin is underway in Seminole County Florida. After two years spent building their cases, the prosecution and defense are ready for their day in court. Characters give testimonies of the events surrounding the murders and testify to analysis of the evidence. Clemente will make a decision in hopes of proving his innocence, but will it backfire? Clemente’s trial for the murders of Cheryl Williams and Carol Bareis comes to a close, but this story will take a turn no one could’ve predicted.
EPISODE 5: "I DIDN'T KILL NOBODY"
Clemente’s future hangs in the balance with the death penalty on the table. Both sides have presented their cases, but we’re all pieces of evidence analyzed and were all investigations performed? In episode five, we explore potential alternative theories for the murders on Vagabond Way. Did law enforcement’s investigation into Clemente overlook the secrets and lies of other suspects or corroborate the alibis of all parties?
EPISODE 6: EVIDENCE RE-EXAMINED
It’s been five years since Clemente Aguirre-Jarquin’s conviction and death-row sentence. When a shocking and flagrant act comes to light, it will cast doubt on the entire case and present the opportunity for Clemente to fight back. While Clemente takes steps to overturn his convictions and sentencing, the U.S. legal system is not so easily swayed. Evidence collected in the week following the murders is examined for the first time, and Clemente will put his hopes in a new ally that is not only focused on proving his innocence, but on saving his life.
EPISODE 7: DEMONS MADE ME DO IT
As he continues to sit behind bars for a crime he insists he didn’t commit, Clemente’s fight for his life continues, but it seems like he’s fighting an uphill battle. While he now has the aid of the hardworking team at the Innocence Project, progress is slow… or sometimes seems to move backward. Even worse, someone who has confessed to the murders is walking free. So what justification does the U.S. legal system have for upholding Clemente’s sentence? Now that Clemente has the heavy-hitting legal team in his corner and a new suspect with an incriminating past, will he finally get another day in court?
EPISODE 8: LIES DON'T LIVE FOREVER
Clemente Aguirre-Jarquin has spent over 14 years in prison, 10 of those on death row, and he is finally getting another shot to present his case in court. However, before the trial can even begin, Clemente is finally granted his freedom and walks out of prison into a world much different than the one we left. In the season finale, we take a hard look at the United States Criminal Justice System and speak directly to a source that provides startling statistics (and their own experience) around wrongful incarcerations in the United States.
